Church Boards (Click on any title to see a more complete list of responsibilities.) A Church Council provides coordination and communication between boards and other groups, and calls official church meetings. It is composed of church officers, board and denominational representatives. Primary church officers are a moderator, clerk and treasurer. A Board of Deacons or Diaconate has up to five members chosen by each of the four denominational groups or societies. They assist in worship, oversee a charity fund, support the ministers, oversee church membership and promote denominational relationships. Each of the following seven boards sets policy for and oversees a particular area of church life. Up to eight members are elected to each board for three year terms. Administration and Human Resources oversees the church office, handles insurance, contracts and legal issues, sets personnel policies and oversees performance evaluations for church staff. Building and Facilities oversees regular and long term maintenance of the physical plant, sets rental and building use policies, and employs custodial staff. Christian Education and Youth oversees the Sunday School, Youth Fellowship programs, adult education and special events, working with staff in these areas. Fellowship generates programming that nurtures the church community in various ways (coffee hours, suppers, etc.) and oversees some of the church’s caregiving ministries. They also support some fundraising events, such as the church fair, and are a liaison to the Sterling Community Theater. Finance oversees the church budget, the church treasurer, annual stewardship enlistment campaign, investments and endowments. Outreach and Social Responsibility oversees the allocation of Benevolence or Outreach giving, promotes volunteer involvement in mission and outreach projects, sponsors educational programs and advocates for social concerns. They are a liaison to the Boy Scouts and Village Green Preschool. Worship oversees activities that support worship (ushers and greeters) and works with the ministers and the Deacons to enhance the church’s worship. They work with the Music Director to oversee the music program and maintain the pipe organ, pianos and other instruments.
