ORGANIZATION First Church is completely self-governing, with officers and board members elected at the annual congregational meeting in April. Each denominational group or society also governs its own limited affairs. Approximately sixty people serve in these official capacities. Ministers are “called” or elected by vote of the congregation and remain as long as there is mutual agreement to do so. A budget is adopted each year, the primary support for which comes from member contributions. Pledges for these contributions are solicited each year, and become the basis for formulating the budget. First Church is an Ecumenical Shared Ministry—one of thirty such congregations in central Massachusetts, though one of very few with our particular mix of denominations.
